"Late December Back in '63 (93)"

I saw The Jersey Boys the other night. For those of you who don't know, it's a musical about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, and it was incredible.

Here's something I didn't know until I saw this thing: "December, 1963 (Oh What a Night)" is about the songwriter getting laid for the first time. I was suddently reminded that the song was our prom theme in high school. Now, getting laid and proms were not "themes" for Dr. Kenneth in high school, but I'm sure it was for some. What I don't get is how the adults approving this, having grown up closer to the time of the song coming out, let this devirginizing* song to get through.

How about you guys? What was the theme to your prom? Did you go? How awesome is that song, with or without the knowledge of its lyrical content? Anyone remember a song associated with their devirginization?**

Ha! That was my prom theme too! I remember my English teacher saying that it didn't encourage the best behaviors and even quoted the line,"You know, I didn't even know her name." We should have voted for "Say It Ain't So" by Weezer.

I hear that musical is awesome, i really want to see it!

My prom theme was something really stupid thought up by the junior class. All i remember is an ugly fake Eiffel tower.

God, I think ours was "Unforgettable," but obviously, it was...otherwise I wouldn't say "I think"

I can't even recall the other one...hmm

Maybe I am just old...or maybe my gay brain is slowly eating my str8 memories

I don't remember it at all. Does that mean I am old? I seriously have no memory of it. Maybe I blocked it out?

When the remake of Oh What a Night came out in the early 90's, I broke the news to my super-religious roommate that it was about his devirginization and think it wrecked her emotionally for days. I kinda got a thrill out of telling her, to be honest.
Our prom theme was Unchained Melody for some really odd reason. Our Homecoming theme one year was Warrant's Heaven, which the teachers/advisors defaulted to after Warrant's Cherry Pie was the one most students voted on. Good times!

"Precious and Few" by Climax was the de-virginizing song for me and I think it was the theme song for the prom.

For some reason, that song made women want to give up the cat like you worked for PeTA. Or Stradivarius.

Ironically, "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" was I think the prom theme for a couple of years before me and I think a lot of guys got laid because of that.

(Would there even BE any white people left if Frankie Valli hadn't gotten so many of us laid??)

I can't remember if I actually got laid because of it, but "Swearin' to God" was another "cat giver upper" when I went to college and the disco thing was in.

I don't remember what our prom themes were; I'm sure we had them, and that they were completely wholesome.

But, I went stag both years and stole dates from girls I didn't know very well.

I can't remember if there was music playing when I was deflowered. I couldn't hear it over the voices in my head yelling, "damn, that hurts."

I do remember lots of heavy petting to metal ballads, like Scorpions "Still Loving You," Ozzie's "Goodbye to Romance," Kiss' "Tears are Falling."

I'm not proud, but I'm honest.

What's prom? I'm still a virgin.

There was no soundtrack to my devirginization. Besides, I don't think there are any 90 second songs out there suitable for that awkward moment.

Classy: Your teacher sounds cool. Must have been one of the honors ones. I miss you! When are we going to have an LC meeting to talk Niner out of retirement?

Nut: You don't mean an Eifel Tower like the sexual position, do you? Probably not . . .

Fit: The gay has eroded your straight brain. Probably for the best. Straight brains just think about boobs.

Radio: I will hereby provide you with new memories: Your prom theme was Youth Gone Wild by Skid Row and your lost your virginity to The Toxic Waltz by Exodus.

Chud: You should have invited a really nerdy girl to paintball, and then have a paintball prom. Of course, you'd have to tell her to never, ever tell anyone about it.

Jules: If you listen to the lyrics of Heaven, it's actually the PERFECT prom theme.

Zen: You seem to know all the songs to get into the bloomers. I admire that. Also, I like the idea of Frankie Valli procreating the white race, but I think it's mostly Italians.

Helen: Are you a metal head, or did you just date them? Either way, awesome.

Fawl: I think we should have a blog prom. A Brom, if you will.

360: You put me to shame with your ninety seconds. I think mine was more like 31 seconds, like a TV theme song would have been the only song to fit it.

Hmm...I don't remember the themes of the proms I went to. I was a prom hor, I had lots of friends at other schools.

Having said the above, I most certainly did not do the nasty on any aforementioned prom night. I didn't even drink! Boo...I wasn't as sassy back then I guess.

And yes, that song is great! Are you a musicals fan, Dr. Ken? I love a man that likes a musical...

I dunno--I grew up in southwest Iowa which was about as Scandanavian as it gets, and "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" was the roller rink standard.

"Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" is one of the biggest hits ever written as far as performance royalties.

I effing hate that song. Not surprising, since I hate all things.

Our high school prom theme was some crappy piano song performed by the popular quarterback, and was called something beyond cheesy, like "Love Is Always" or something. I showed my restraint by hanging outside with the smokers for 98% of the prom, then going inside just to get the pizza I'd ordered.

I can't look at a Suburban with a Jesus fish on it and not giggle.

As for your query about my roommate, we've bumped foreheads, not fuzzies, and I will be blogging about it soon.

As for your blog....I think devirginize might be better than any real word I have ever heard. Rock on, fake dictionary, rock on.

Prom...I went to like four proms, two at my highschool, two at two different hightschools...none of them involved getting laid. I can't even remember the themes...and honestly, that was back when I didn't even drink. I KNOW! Can you believe it? There once was a point in my life when I didn't drink. Amazing.

I touched more boob at prom than I have it the last 2 years.

Thanks for opening up old wounds, Gance

I think my prom theme was something like "why the hell haven't I graduated yet?" Yeah, that sounds about right.

The song I remember from my "special night" was a Sousa march.

Sass: Only when I'm in the second row and it has lots of rock songs in it.

Zen: The Zen Dogg comes back with research! You're my boy, blue!

Pistols: That quarterback song sounds so embarrassing. I'd have stepped out for a smoke too.

Casey: Not sure how that relates, but I agree. I'm not quite wher I want one of those Darwin fish cause that's just snotty.

Clumsy: Let me know when you post that shit. Give me a hint. Did his forehead touch your boobs or did your forehead touch his bean bag?

Jenni: I have a feeling if you drank then you'd have been invited to four more proms.

24: Proms are the perfect setting for boob touching.

Chardsy: Were you a super senior?

Grant: that must have been intense!!

The specialest night in a young man's life was in the back of a Suburban going to church camp.

It is a point of pride.

No prom for me Jr. or Sr., As I recall I went to concerts instead. The Dead Kennedys was one and I think I saw "X" on the other.

I remember loathing the song, I remember going to the after parties for the prom. I was a new student at a new high school and to tell you the truth had no desire to go to the prom, so I skipped it went to some parties and well, I really did not appreciate the song, had I listened to the lyrics maybe I would have had more of an interest but at the time I had my own play list and this did not fit into the new school. Other than the few the happy few, we band of brothers; For he...Ok I sample from the bard, but I suppose my point is that I was not ready to join this band of brothers without having the confidence that they were the real deal.

All I remember about my senior prom was that the DJ played the song Closer by Nine Inch Nails.

I remember one of my teachers running to the front of the room and the song immediately being cut off.

The only thing I remember about losing my virginity is thinking That was it? Ah, good times.

Sabina said...

I don't remember my prom theme song, but I do remember the revolt over the fact that the DJ wouldn't play "Baby Got Back" until everyone hollered the first two minutes of it word for word. Then he finally gave in.

I can kinda remember my devirginification music, but I'm too embarrassed to tell you what it was.
