Male Buddies Are Crappy at Staying in Touch

Have you noticed this? Women always seem to have this regularly scheduled activities like lunches, manicures, book clubs, and things where they make sure they stay connected with friends. Men, they usually just go out and get hammered with buddies every now and again.

So, with only around 3 of my closest friends still living in Chicago proper, I've been trying to find something to do that is biweekly or monthly that assures we see one another. Here are some options - let me know what you think . . .

Golfing: This is out. I hate golf because it's boring as hell.

Ballgames: This is not a bad idea because a few of us have season tickets to Cubs games. So, I'm thinking every other week the 4 of us go to a game, not because it's good to watch a team this bad, but because this is just what men do. I still have so many fond memories of Wrigley that it can still be a good experience.

Dinner Parties: This would be a couples thing, but I've done this before where you rotate houses, and it's pretty fun.

Sports: Maybe we could play on a team of some kind together, like softball?

Trivia at Bars: We have done this in the past, but you really can't do much catching up if you're racking your brain for answers the whole time.

Flag Burnings: I'm just seeing if you're still paying attention.

What do you think, seven readers? Do you have any write-ins? Anyone else have this problem?

Bad movie nights. We used to have those in NY all the time and I miss them. It's easy to talk because everyone only half pays attention to the movie and it's a great way to get people laughing. And drinking and food can also be involved. People usually always stick around well after the movie to chat.

oh lord. i'm the worst at keeping in touch with dude friends, and most of my friends are the same........golf, buddy. that's literally the only way i get straight up dude time..it's actually a pretty good time in my opinion...that or sporting events, but that's too expensive to do that on a regular basis, so it's not bad to go to a sports bar every so often and order bar food, beer, etc...taking fishing trips or trips to vegas ain't bad either...guys options for just the guys is pretty limited...any other activities guys can bond over is pretty gay, that is unless the guys bonding over those activities are gay. which that is ok too.

i'm terrible at keeping in touch with people. i don't have any friends from highschool/college that i see regularly, and only a handful that i often chat with over the phone/internet.
the dinner party thing sounds pretty fun, tho.

sorry i couldn't be of any help!

Beck: Shitty movie night is a terrific call! Way easier to host than a dinner party.

Burjan: It's hard, right? I kind of like this bad movie night option that BeckEye (above) recommends . . . River's Edge?

Jov: Yeah, dinner party is a favorite, unless I want to make it just dudes.

It's sad, because it's true.

Beck: Yes. Or "Leprechaun in the Hood."

5000: You see the same thing? Weird, right?

I love the bad movie idea! Do you play poker? That's kind of a guy thing right? I don't know. My friends that live close are kind of lame...not lame, but they all have tiny babies and are exhausted so when they have a free second they sleep and don't want to get together much right now. You are right though, it seems that women have a much easier time making sure they stay connected.

You could have a sausage-fest!

For a movie, I highly recommend "It's Pat." It's so terrible that it's in my Top 10 favorite movies.

Or "Manos, The Hands of Fate." Mystery Science Theater did that one & it's pretty hilarious.

for the record. rivers edge is not a bad movie, it is a fantastic movie....pretty much any of the tromaville movies are funbad, including surf nazis must die.

You should give golf another shot. The way I play is more beer and car driving than it is golfing. Knowing you, I think you guys should rotate picking a band to go see or something. You guys could borrow my kids and bring them to Chuckie Cheese if you want. They have beer there. :)

I am assume you have tried this already. Dutch Rudder night. Rotating houses, no gals allowed. I personally have not tried this but I assume with the proper pumicing you could create a life long unbreakable bond with your boys.

I am assuming shall I say. Not good at proofreading obviously.

my guy friends in college would go out for "man meals" every month or so to joints like denny's or moe's. they'd all get pretty fired up about it; they just planned a whole "man weekend" for this upcoming friday

Radio: I forgot about poker, but I think Bad Movie Night might win out.

Andrew: Solid choices. We were thinking about that movie with Jamie Fox where he's the futuristic fighter pilot. Boom!

Burjan: Thanks for coming to the defense of "The River's Edge." It will always be among my favorites.

Sista: Chuck E Cheese is not a bad idea: Ski Ball Night! And if you ever want to delete one of your own comments and redo it, you can click the garbage can.

Jov: Man meal at Denny's? Awesome. Going to Denny's before 2AM is something I've never experienced.
